Toxic Ingredients To Avoid When Shopping

Hi guys. Just for info :) .These are the lists of things which we should check out before buying any product. Errr... seriously, after I spent times to check them out, most of the products do contains at least one toxic ingredient. 90% of the products that I've bought do contains these toxic ingredients. Now I have to do some shopping again, darn...

Chemical
Description
Diethanolamine(DEA) This is a “wetting” agent primarily used in shampoos and lotions to provide lather.
Can also be found in brake fluid, degreasers and antifreeze.

Supposedly this chemical is not too harmful all by itself; but it reacts none-too-nicely with other chemicals in our products and can create a very potent carcinogen called nitrosodiethanolamine (NDEA), which is readily absorbed through the skin and has been linked with stomach, esophagus, liver and bladder cancers.
Boleh mengganggu hormon dan membentuk nitrat penyebab barah
Pendedahan berulangan pada kulit mungkin meningkatkan risiko barah hati dan buah pinggang
Parabens, of any kind:
Butylparaben,
Ethylparaben,
Heptylparaben,
Methylparaben,
Propylparaben
Can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, cleansing gels, personal lubricants, topical pharmaceuticals and toothpaste.

These have been linked to cancer, immunotoxicity, and organ system toxicity, and exposure of newborn male mammals to butylparaben adversely affects the secretion of testosterone and the function of the male reproductive system.
They can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers.

Studies indicate that methylparaben applied on the skin may react with UVB leading to increased skin aging and DNA damage.
Grapefruit seed extract that is promoted as a natural preservative was identified as containing artificial preservatives such as methylparaben.
Butylated Hydroxytoluene(BHT) Primarily used to prevent fats in foods from becoming rancid, but it is also used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, jet fuels, rubber, petroleum products, electrical transformer oil, and embalming fluid.

The Cosmetics Database rates BHT as having a low high hazard to high hazard depending on product usage and says it has been shown to be linked to cancer, developmental toxicity, allergies, neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, biochemical or cellular level changes.
Propylene Glycol(PG),
also goes by names like
1,2-Dihydroxypropane,
2-Hydroxypropanol,
Methylethy Glycol,
1,2-Propanediol,
Propane-1,2-Diol
This is a chemical found in personal care products that acts as a penetration enhancer that keeps products from melting in heat and/or freezing when it is cold. It is used as anti-freeze as well as in tons of personal care products.

It alters the structure of the skin by allowing chemicals to penetrate deep beneath it while increasing their ability to reach the blood stream.
It has been shown to be linked to cancer, developmental/reproductive issues, allergies/immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity and endocrine disruption.
Meresap cepat melalui kulit. Sentuhan yang lama boleh menyebabkan ketidaknormalan hati, otak dan buah pinggang
Triclosan Triclosan is normally used as a bacteria killer.
Found in tons of products from deodorants to toothpaste to household cleaners, triclosan mainly acts like an antibiotic, trying to kill anything that it comes in contact with.

It can also combine with chlorine in our tap water to make chloroform gas, and one study even showed that triclosan was broken down into dioxins in river water because of the presence of sunlight. Because everyone wants antibiotic soaps and lotions, triclosan is very popular with product makers, even though regular old soap is just as effective.

Tricolsan is similar to the pesticide Agent Orange and can cause decreased fertility, birth defects and damage to major body organs.
Bisphenol A(BPA) This is a chemical compound primarily used to harden plastic.
A 2010 report from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raised concerns regarding exposure of fetuses, infants, and young children.

BPA mimics the sex hormone estradiol when exposed to high temperatures and/or certain dish detergents, and in mice and rats there is evidence that low doses of bisphenol A can cause structural damage to the brain, hyperactivity, abnormal sexual behavior, increased fat formation, early puberty and disrupted reproductive cycles. BPA-laden plastic is used in some baby and water bottles, sports equipment, medical and dental devices, dental fillings and sealants, eyeglass lenses, CDs and DVDs, and household electronics.
Look for “BPA-Free” labels on any plastic you buy.
Penganggu hormon
Polyethylene Polyethylene is a plastic and it is also used in some skincare products as an abrasive, adhesive, binder, bulking agent, and emulsion stabilizer.

It has been linked to cancer, allergies/immunotoxicity, organ system toxicity (non-reproductive), skin irritation, neurotoxicity, and biochemical or cellular level changes.
Sodium Lauryl
Sulfate(SLS)
Although the jury is still out on this ingredient, we should be on the side of caution when it comes to stuff like this.

This synthetic substance is a surfactant and is used in any task requiring the removal of oily stains and residues. For example, it is found in higher concentrations with industrial products including engine degreasers, floor cleaners, and car wash soaps. It is also used in lower concentrations with toothpastes, shampoos, and shaving foams.

It can cause eye irritations, skin rashes, hair loss, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, and allergic reactions.
Boleh merosakkan mata, merengsakan kulit dan mengakibatkan pernafasan yang lambat dan sukar. Boleh berada dalam tubuh selama 5 hari, terkumpul di jantung, hati, paru-paru dan otak.
1,4-dioxane Primarily used as a solvent in manufacturing situations, it is also commonly found in personal care products because it is an accidental byproduct of the ethoxylation process that goes on when cosmetic products are made.

A study by the Organic Consumers Association determined that that dioxane was inside many of organic and natural’s products, and another study by the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics found that when laboratory animals were tested with 1,4-dioxane at the lowest parts per billion level—over the animal’s lifetime – they developed cancer, and that the combined effects of lifetime exposure to 1,4-dioxane and other carcinogens can create synergistic effects, so that levels from multiple compounds add up and even multiply to create greater risk.

The Environmental Protection Agency classifies 1,4-Dioxane as a Group B2, probable human carcinogen, based on induction of nasal cavity and liver carcinomas in multiple strains of rats, liver carcinomas in mice, and gall bladder carcinomas in guinea pigs.
Butyl Cellosolve
also known as :
Butyl Glycol,
Dowanol,
Bane-Clene and Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether(EGBE)
Found in a wide variety of household cleaning agents like glass cleaners, oven cleaners, and general degreasers.

Some animal studies indicate that it produces reproductive problems, such as testicular damage, reduced fertility, death of embryos and birth defects, and in humans, it can irritate mucous membranes and cause liver and kidney damage.
Sodium Fluoride In toothpaste Pemakanan dalam jumlah yang kecil mungkin menyebabkan kepeningan, muntah-muntah dan cirit-birit
Diethylene Glycol(DEG) In toothpaste
It is an ingredient used in antifreeze and as a solvent DEG is a highly toxic organic solvent that may cause nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, urinary problems, kidney failure, breathing problems, lethargy, convulsions, coma, and even death when ingested.

The potential health risks from chronic exposure to DEG are a particular concern in specific vulnerable populations such as children and consumers with kidney or liver disease.

Consumers should also be aware that the following toothpastes have been recalled abroad due to DEG content:
• Japan: Twinkle Toothpaste, and Powdered toothpaste for Children with a taste of strawberry (Imported by Soshin); MTK Toothpaste (imported by Nihon Grande Champagne Co.); and Toothpaste (Imported by Korai).
• US Food and Drug Administration: toothpaste labelled Colgate Toothpaste Triple, determined to be counterfeit and to possibly contain DEG.
• UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency: toothpastes labelled Sensodyne Original and Sensodyne Mint, determined to be counterfeit and to contain DEG.
• Hong Kong Department of Health: MAXAM Toothpaste with Fluoride, SANQI, and Tianqi toothpastes.
Singapore Health Sciences Authority: Hei Mei Toothpaste, Hei Mei Calcium Toothpaste, and Maxam Toothpaste with Fluoride.
Methylisothiazolinone
(MIT),

also known as
3(2H)-Isothiazolone,
2-Methyl-
A widely-used preservative; has been associated with allergic reactions. Lab studies on the brain cells of mammals also suggest that methylisothiazolinone may be neurotoxic.
A preservative used in cosmetics and beauty products. It is a powerful biocide, or “chemical substance capable of killing living organisms, usually in a selective way.” Biocides are a general term that includes antimicrobial, germicide, antibiotic, and antifungal.

Ultimately, Methylisothiazolinone is used to prevent a wide variety of bacteria and fungi from growing in cosmetics and beauty products, most often in shampoo. It is only approved for use in rinse-off formulas and at low concentrations.

Although many connections are made between Methylisothiazolinone and Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions, research by CTFA.org and News-Medical.net shows that the concentration levels found in cosmetics and beauty products are so low that there is no risk in using products with this preservative.

The EWG lists Methylisothiazolinone as a sensitizer and irritant. It is approved for use in rinse-off products by the CIR.
Phthalates – of any kind,
except for Polyethylene Terephthalate Ethylene (PETE)
Phthalates are a family of industrial chemicals that are used as plastic softeners or solvents in many different consumer products.

They can be absorbed through the skin, inhaled as fumes, ingested when they contaminate food or when children bite or suck on toys, and are inadvertently but directly administered to patients from some PVC (polyvinyl chloride or vinyl) medical devices.
Phthalates are found in many leading beauty care products, including hair spray, deodorant, nail polish and perfume that we may be using everyday.

Phthalates Facts
Studies have shown that phthalates can damage the liver, the kidneys, the lungs and the reproductive system, especially the developing testes.
Sperm damage linked to phthalate used in fragrances, new study by Harvard researchers finds, December 9, 2002
Tetrasodium EDTA EDTA(ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a chelating agent, used to sequester and decrease the reactivity of metal ions that may be present in a product.

Tetrasodium EDTA is a preservative that’s made from the known carcinogen, formaldehyde and sodium cyanide. It is also a penetration enhancer, meaning it breaks down the skin's protective barrier, going right into our bloodstream.
Many companies trying to be "natural" will use Tetrasodium EDTA instead of parabens to preserve their products. But, Tetrasodium EDTA is just as bad.
Diazolidinyl Urea Diazolidinyl Urea readily breaks down in the product or on the skin and releases formaldehyde.

It's an endocrine disruptor, a possible neurotoxin, a known immune system toxicant, and has a possible link to cancer.
